Quick answer
If you’re roasting whole sweet potatoes in a toaster oven, 400°F (204°C) works extremely well.
Cook time: about 45–50 minutes for medium sweet potatoes.
I used 3 whole sweet potatoes, flipped them around 3 times during cooking, and roasted them until the skins darkened and the centers became very soft.
The result was creamy inside with lightly caramelized edges.
Ingredients
- 3 sweet potatoes (just the amount I used for this)
- Oil + salt for coating before roasting (optional but recommended)
- Finishing salt
Prep
- Wash and dry the sweet potatoes
- Poke each one several times with a fork
- Lightly coat with oil and salt if desired
Roast at 400°F
Place the sweet potatoes directly on the toaster oven tray.
Cook for about 45–50 minutes, flipping them around 3 times during cooking.
You can flip more or less depending on your cooking setup. Just keep an eye on them and go with your gut.
Finishing move
After roasting, I used a fork and tongs to peel the skin off while they were still hot, can use other utensils or if that "guy" can use your hands. It should peel with ease.
To eat them, I lightly squished each potato flat while still keeping them thick and fluffy, then sprinkled finishing salt over the top.
That final salt addition made a huge difference.
What to look for
- Skin becomes darker and wrinkled
- Some caramelized syrup may leak out
- Potatoes feel very soft when squeezed gently with tongs
If the center still feels firm, keep cooking.
Variations to test later
- Try flavored oils or rendered fats (e.g. bacon grease)
- Try butter after roasting
- Test cinnamon + finishing salt
- Test slightly lower heat (375°F) for larger potatoes
